Hong Kongers of all ages enjoy swimming as a recreational activity, and especially young children love taking lessons at local pools. Not only can swimming provide entertainment but it can also bring several health benefits such as weight loss, cardiovascular improvements, energy boosts and stress-relief; all three benefits should be realized regularly at least three times each week due to limited spaces in public pools – but don’t fret: many private Hong Kong pools exist where this recreational pursuit can take place!
Most public swimming pools were constructed during the 1960s and 70s with funding provided in part or whole by the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club, featuring standardised layouts consisting of two 50-metre pools with standardised changing facilities and management rooms, standardised layouts for changing facilities, management rooms and many have since been renovated to meet modern needs; for instance Tai Wan Shan Pool underwent major refurbishment in 2011 when eight pools were added surrounded by lush greenery for maximum views over Victoria Harbour.
Unfortunately, not all public swimming pools have opened this summer due to a shortage of lifeguards. According to the Hong Kong Recreation and Sports Professionals General Union, approximately 20 public pools may only partially open this month and approximately 500 licensed private pools won’t open as scheduled due to this lack of lifeguards. As such, the HKRSPGU has requested Leisure and Cultural Services Department permit schools and training institutions to use public pools even without lifeguards being present provided that there will be qualified individuals present who will supervise students using these public pools – provided there will be qualified personnel responsible for supervising students using public pools despite no lifeguard being present if necessary.
HKRSPGU also suggested to the government that school and training organizations be permitted to conduct public coaching activities during operating hours in their facilities, in order to encourage more locals to swim while meeting shortages of qualified teachers.
